Domain Independent Integrated Multimedia Data Mining is a Frivolous Exercise: Classicism vs. Connectionism Debate Revisited

چکیده
In this paper the classicist and the connectionist debate is integrated in a multimedia data mining framework. Due to the ready availability of visual information digitally, the problem to store, retrieve and organize images is gaining tremendous importance and poses a serious challenge for practitioners of AI and databases alike. The central problem for image database management is the idea of an annotation associated with every image. This idea of an annotation as a representation of an image is explored in this paper. The claim is that arriving at a suitable annotation using data mining techniques however does not solve the problem of representation and reference. Most image annotation techniques are classicist, while connectionist approaches which have the advantage of contextuality have not been explored much because of the problem of systematicity. Consequently the image annotation problem can be used as a critique of both.

On the Systematicity of Language and Thought
The last twenty years or so have seen a lot of discussion about systematicity-roughly the idea that if a person's repertoire contains the sentence/thought thatJohn loves Mary, then her repertoire also contains the sentence/thought that Mary loves John.' Much of the discussion of systematicity has focused on the technical question of whether and how connectionists can explain the systematicity o...
متن کاملProbabilistic Single Function Dual Process Theory and Logic Programming as Approaches to Non-monotonicity in Human vs. Artificial Reasoning
In this paper, it is argued that single function dual process theory is a more credible psychological account of non-monotonicity in human conditional reasoning than recent attempts to apply logic programming (LP) approaches in artificial intelligence to these data. LP is introduced and among other critiques, it is argued that it is psychologically unrealistic in a similar way to hash coding in...
متن کاملDoes Classicism explain universality? Arguments against a pure Classical component of mind
One of the hallmarks of human cognition is the capacity to generalize over arbitrary constituents. Recently, Marcus (1998b, 1998a) argued that this capacity, called universal generalization (universality), is not supported by Connectionist models. Instead, universality is best explained by Classical symbol systems, with Connectionism as its implementation. Here it is argued that universality ...
متن کاملApproximate resistivity and susceptibility mapping from airborne electromagnetic and magnetic data, a case study for a geologically plausible porphyry copper unit in Iran
This paper describes the application of approximate methods to invert airborne magnetic data as well as helicopter-borne frequency domain electromagnetic data in order to retrieve a joint model of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity. The study area located in Semnan province of Iran consists of an arc-shaped porphyry andesite covered by sedimentary units which may have potential ...
متن کاملA Comparison of Rule based and Distance Based Semantic Video Mining
In this paper, a subspace-based multimedia data mining framework is proposed for video semantic analysis, specifically video event/concept detection, by addressing two basic issues, i.e., semantic gap and rare event/concept detection. The proposed framework achieves full automation via multimodal content analysis and intelligent integration of distance-based and rule-based data mining technique...
